The struggle is real people: I cannot get my three-year-old to pose for pictures.

Hola people. I’m Anna Maria, and I am a Costa Rican-American who met a Sri Lankan in Costa Rica (go figure), got married and moved halfway around the world with him to settle down in another tropical country but with elephants. I immediately fell in love with Sri Lanka and have been lucky to call it home for the past 8 years. I am now a slightly bleary-eyed mother of two who loves drinking tea, riding in tuk tuks and eating pol sambol.

So what is this blog about?

Though my Singhala is still terrible, my love for Sri Lankan food and culture (and not to mention my pretty impressive hand-to-mouth-eating), has led my Sri Lankan family and friends to joke that I must have been a Lankan in another life.

I know that not everyone who comes to this country will have Sri Lankan friends or family to help them understand this culture and its nuances, so I am here to help!

Through trial and error (ok, mostly errors and faux pas) I have found the answers to many of the pressing questions we all have when we first arrive in Sri Lanka, including the age-old question that will continue to confuse foreigners for years to come: “Does the head waggle mean Yes or No???”

I want everyone who comes to visit this beautiful country to love it as much as I do and I hope this blog helps expats and tourists alike understand and appreciate everything Sri Lanka has to offer.
